This small nocturnal fox is found in the Sahara of North Africa. It's name comes from an Arabic work "fanak" which means fox. It's most notable physical characteristic is is large ears which help it dissipate heat. It has a very keen sense of hearing, able to hear prey underground. It's adapted to low water, high temperature, desert environment. It eats insects, small mammals, and birds. It's main predator is the eagle owl. The soles of its feet are protected from the hot sand by thick fur.
