Islands of Adventure - Hogwarts Castle

It is mildly ironic that yesterday, when all the rumors came out about Cars Land coming over to Disney's Hollywood Studios, that Sam and I visited Islands of Adventure and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter for our 2 year anniversary.

If you haven't been, you probably should. The Wizarding World is a marvel of theme park technology, architecture, and story. While I think that Disney trumps Universal on almost all counts, WWoHP is stunning, and very much at the level of quality of something you would find at Disney. It is actually better than some weaker parts of WDW. I was not a huge fan of the Forbidden Journey ride when I first rode it in 2010, but after riding it yesterday, I think I can safely say that it is the best theme park ride in Orlando, with the only real exception possibly being the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at DHS. The area and the main attraction are very much like Cars Land, in fact. Even if you are not a fan of the books or films, you will be entertained and thrilled by the ride. And when standing in the village of Hogsmeade, you really feel like you've been dropped into the motion picture, just like what it has been said to feel like when standing in Radiator Springs out at DCA.

That said, when Sam and I were walking out of the park yesterday, we agreed that it was ok that the California folk have Cars Land since we have something as immersive as the Wizarding World to go along with all of WDW at our fingertips. And then I come home and hear about this new rumor of DHS getting at least Radiator Springs Racers, possibly all of Cars Land as well.

I'm a little torn on the issue. DHS needs a huge shot in the arm, and while Cars Land/RSR would do the trick, I'm not sure if it would be the right decision. Leaving a huge draw like Cars Land unique to DCA is very important for that park which is just turning an important corner in its life as a theme park. But, I'm sure my opinion, as well as that of the members of the very divided "Disney community", don't really matter to those higher up in control. If they see Cars Land as a massive commercial success, and they think that it will boost DHS and not hurt DCA, they'll go ahead and do it. Thanks for reading, and have a great day!! | | |
