milky way over balanced rock

    Newer Older

Stayed out until 4AM last night traipsing around Arches National Park with my photog friend Charlie. For this shot he let me borrow his 5DMkII with the 16-35L lens - full frame, ISO 3200 at f 2.8... Holy moly!!

I did the light painting with my 580EXII strobe, gelled with 1/4 CTO and shot through a big long snoot to try to keep spill off the plants in the foreground. Had the flash set at 1/4th power and popped it off about a dozen times across the rock face.

Jon Kirker, sundevilstormin, and 50 other people added this photo to their favorites.

Wonderful shot! I've been thinking about making the switch from Nikon to get the 5d MkII.

Very impressive work, and good use of a snoot. Did you actually walk by those rocks or did your fire your flash from afar?

Awesome shot. I was there last summer. The first night my wife got spooked and we went to the hotel. The second night was cloudy. Boo!
