Kirsty MacColl

    Newer Older

I was really sad to hear today that the Justice For Kirsty campaign was being wound up since "the committee was successful in achieving most of its aims" and "it is unlikely that any more could be achieved."

For those who don't know the story, Kirsty MacColl was a British singer/songwriter, but more importantly a Mum to two boys - who died when saving her son's life whilst diving in Cozumel Mexico...it was a horrible and tragic death, a death that still hasn't been fully investigated...

The news has made me think of Kirsty's Mum who has fought for justice for the past 9 years. I have followed the campaign from the beginning.

Eddie Reader, Billie Bragg, Bono and many other British musicians have campaigned alongside Kirsty's Mum...

So, as I'm listening to Fairytale in New York this Christmas - I'll be raising a glass to Kirsty...she was a remarkably talented and brave woman.

Cora, this is an amazing tribute. I have to say that I was unaware of Kirsty's tragic fate, but now that you have made me aware of her story, I will visit the links that you posted, and also research the details of her story. :) - Jim

I thought that this Wikipedia link would be a good place to start, and I felt I should share it with anyone else, like me, who was unaware of this unfortunate tragedy and injustice.

Thanks fo adding the link Jim - I am astonished that noone has been properly held to account for Kirsty's death. The trauma her little boys went through seeing what happened...and the Mexican courts believe that a "fine" of the equivalent of £61 is justice!! It's truly not, one of her sons explained what he went through that day, noone, least of all a child, should have to witness that...and the person who really killed Kirsty is still unaccounted for...it's a crying shame.

Nice touching photo and words Cora. Lovely tribute.

As for her music... My favourite is "Theres a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis". I have put her "best of" on this morning after this nice reminder of her talent. Thanks for taking the time to post this.

I remember when this happened and out of all her works the Chip shop one came to mind, not a bad legacy.

Kirsty was an amazing light whose flame still burns bright.

I sang 'Fairytale of New York' at the karaoke at my local the other day after I'd heard this news, and cried afterwards.

I reckon it's another case of justice not being met because those fighting for it simply don't have the money to do so.

Anyway, Kirsty - Requiest in Pace! x
