Painted Hills

Must View Large!

This is a shot of the Painted Hills and their impressive colors and layers. The Painted Hills Unit of the John Day fossil beds is in Central Oregon near Mitchell.

For the solar eclipse that was to occur on May 20, my dad and I wanted to be somewhere that we could actually observe the eclipse. Most of the northwest was supposed to be socked in with clouds, but southern and some of central Oregon has some promise. With a small chance of cloud cover, we decided to head to the Painted Hills Unit because it was something worth seeing to make our trip more worthwhile. Turned out that we had quite a bit of cloud cover, but by the time the eclipse rolled around, there were just thin high clouds. So by looking through some heavy duty welders glass, I was able to watch the eclipse peak at about 85% coverage. It was a pretty cool experience!

Thanks for viewing!
