• I love this little detail here. Wonder what it was? 80 year old soot, maybe?
  • 80 years of bird droppings! - relaxing

Tower Fall Down Go Boom

Newer Older

This morning, I watched the "Drexel Shaft", this old smoke stack from a former PRR generation plant, get imploded. My vantage point was from the eastern end of the Spring Garden Street bridge.

Really neat. Over very fast. I'd get up early to watch it again. :-)

Do yourself a favor and view this large...

the trestle was okay afterward...right? right? I don't want a train rolling over the lab as I'm in the middle of experiments...

Yes, the trestle was OK... From my vantage point, the tower fell more or less parallel to the trestle.

woah, that really wasn't much of an implosion, was it? more like a "TIMBERRRRRRR!"

**edit--this is addie, BTW. was doing stuff with my other account...

That's true, it wasn't exactly what I'd anticipated seeing. Still very cool. A very slow motion timberrrrr!

I didn't even know you got this! Wasn't this supposed to be "imploded" and not knocked down?!

    :)

    That's not phallic at all.

So this is where the dorkiness in andipantz comes out. The Drexel Shaft itself was also a USGS geographical survey marker. How do I know this? Because I'm a dork who used to go around trying to find all of the survey markers in the city. Yes, that was me.

    My movements are unpredictable!

It only took 6 comments for someone to go there. Not bad! :-P

That is pretty dorky, but I bet it took you to some interesting locations here and there trying to find them. They often are at landmarks like this, after all....

Aaaacccck! How did I miss hearing about this? Well, it was certainly a symbol of an earlier age (whatever other symbolism came to mind ;) Wish I'd gotten over to say goodbye to it.

Couldn't beat this for a photo of its demise-- wow, the ring of dislodged soot-- what an action shot!!

This has to be one of the best photos taken of that event, if not the best. Photojournalism career?

Thanks! But... I'd say it was just luck. I had no idea which direction the tower was going to fall in in advance, for one thing...
