For all of the trains I took under it, I never had gotten a photo of a train passing beneath the large coaling tower at New Buffalo. Until now! Here we see CSX SD40-2 #8383 and SD40-3 #4042 leading Chicago-Grand Rapids freight Q326 north (railroad east) under the tower on a sunny July morning. 8383 was built as a C&O SD40 and no doubt has hauled many trains under this structure during the past 40+ years. At left is the site of the old PM/C&O New Buffalo yard. While some tracks still exist, it has been most recently used for car storage and MOW staging. The yard ceased operations as an active switching yard and crew base in 1984 with the abandonment of the La Crosse branch from here to Wellsboro, IN.
