Euranet Awards 2011 Prize giving ceremony

The young laureates of the first Euranet Awards were invited to the European Parliament in Brussels for the prize-giving ceremony on the 31st of January 2012. Martin Schulz, Chairman of the European Parliament, attended and hosted the event. The pan-European radio network Euranet had launched the Euranet Awards in November 2011 as a contest for European young journalists on the topic of European citizens’ rights.


Mr Martin Schulz, newly elected president of the European Parliament, opened the ceremony and handed over the first prize to one of the five laureates, Mr Andrei-Mihai Purcarea from Romania. Mr Erlends Calabuig, CEO of Euranet also congratulated the winners.


The jury had to choose between almost 20 reports about discriminations issues as different as for instance one piece about people who are visually impaired, other reports were about women’s rights, gay marriage in the European Union and the European citizen’s initiatives.


The names of the five final winners are:


- Mr Andrei-Mihai Purcarea (Romania): Overall winner

- Mrs Elena Roda (Italy)

- Mr Falk Steinborn (Germany)

- Mrs Aude van Den Hove d’Ertsenryck (Belgium)

- Mrs Jessica Verzulli (Italy).


Andrei-Mihai Purcarea, the best reporter, received as the first prize two internships to experience daily life in radio journalism and to acquire journalistic skills within Euranet network radio stations. He will receive full funding from Euranet to cover travelling expenses and accommodation. Each finalist received an iPad 2.
