SOUTH CHINA SEA (July 12, 2012) Ensign Michael Schrump stands conning officer watch aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Vandegrift as the ship makes her approach for a replenishment-at-sea (RAS) with the dry cargo ship USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4), as the national security cutter USCGC Waesche (WMSL 751) steams alongside preparing to make her approach with the Byrd. During the RAS, Vandegrift took on more than 90,000 gallons of fuel and 35,000 pounds of food, mail and shipâs parts and supplies.
