The Advanced Energy Center is the second building on a newly created research and development campus, which is located immediately adjacent to the main Stony Brook campus. Completed in 2010, the center was designed by Flad Architects/Structural Engineers. Affiliated Engineers Inc. was the MEP engineer, Greenman Pedersen Inc. was the civil engineer, and the construction manager was URS Corporation.
Consistent with the scientific mission of this facility, design and construction incorporated sustainable design principles and meet the US Green Building Council’s LEED certification program, with a goal of LEED Platinum.
Colt was asked to design a system of PV louvres and because of the large spans between the upright supports, Shadovoltaic LS3 System was chosen. This is a fixed system so it was important to assess the angle of incidence to the sun to maximise the PV output. The resulting output of the PV system is 9.5kW peak. The architect and client are very happy with the Colt contribution to the sustainable mission of this facility.
