Rough Legged Hawk On The Wing
A Rough Legged Hawk leaves it's frosty perch after seeing a tasty breakfast moving in the snow. The morning this photo was taken the air temperature was -13F (-25C) and the treetops were coated with frost.
I wasn't sure what type of Hawk this is so I sent it to a friend. This is the verbatim response:
"This is a Rough Legged hawk, pretty much the common light phase. There will be some Ferruginous hawks in your country also, they look alike pretty much, but if you look at the marking on the white legs, the Roughie is speckled and the Ferruginous is barred. The black band on the end of the tail feathers is the give away. Roughie is black, Ferrug is brown."
