Farl By: Farl

There is a little known trivia that Marilyn Monroe, who is arguably the most recognizable movie star ever, is half-Norwegian. Her father is Martin Edward Mortensen, an emigrant from the village of Skjold, 20 km outside Haugesund, Norway. However, he abandoned his family early and he was killed in a motorcycle accident without ever seeing his daughter. This is why there is a statue of Marilyn Monroe outside Rica Maritim Hotel in Haugesund, where the annual Norwegian International Film Festival’s is held.

The statue of Marilyn which now sits on the docks with her back to the ocean was created by legendary Norwegian artist Nils Aas (1933-2004).

Those Norweigians...! Next time I visit Norway, I'll have a different POV.

Wonderful, charming photo. Norway is a very beautiful country.

Really?! Well we never stop learning, do we? Hey farl.. how come you got so many pics and know so much of (beautiful) norway when you live on the other (beautiful) side of the world? :)

Jen, I thought so too but I was surprised when I saw the statue in front of the hotel I was staying.

James, Haugesund is not a big tourist destination, sort of industrial but still exceedingly charming.

Andrea, I was lucky enough to attend a conference in Bergen last year. Then, I proceeded to Haugesund and Oslo for 1 night each as the company I worked for has processing plants in these cities. All official business!

Farl, I see the orange building now. I must admit that when I first viewed this picture I was more smitten by the attributes of the statue of Marilyn Monroe than the surrounding buildings, and since we can see only the corner of the orange building I must admit to no change in how I view this picture.

I just spoke to a "mystic" seconds ago to verify what I heard several times before. That a late European mystic, Maria Simma, once a soul of a famous American came to her for prayers so she can enter heaven. As we all know, she committed suicide and many tells joke on radio-talk that they want to go to hell, too, just to meet her. That poor suffering soul from Purgatory was Norma Jean Baker, a.k.a. Marilyn Monroe. But the mercy of God is infinite, she never went to hell.
I hereby confirm it, she finally made it into heaven!

whoever sculpted made no bones about memorializing the 'wet t-shirt' look by the shore.

Love the story it is new to me also. Nils Aas did a fabulous job on carving this statue. Great shot Farl!

Toni and Maditi, I also didn't know until I saw the statue.

Nav A, the light wasn't really ok but it's the statue which captures the attention.

Sunshine, I agree! so lifelike and the way her arms and legs and feet curl are awesome.

I am no fan of MM, but this staue is superbe! I guess I'm no gentleman 'cause I prefer brunettes. :-P

WOW! Just great! Totally interesting and captivating! Thank You for sharing with us!
Re: Thank You so much for Your warm and encouraging comments! You are welcome! Have a very happy new week, Mr Farl!

Scot, I think MM might be brunette originally. She bleached her hair and the rest is history.

Dr Tao, thanks too. The week is going great but just too hectic.

She is my idol Kuya Farl...I love her singing Diamonds Are A Girl's Bestfriend. Also her Happy Birthday Mr. President rendition to her once beloved man who allegedly betrayed her, saddens me very much so.

Farl... This is a tiny bit of wickedly humorous lore, too, you know. Glenn
