This Magazine Nudged Me into geology
My freshman year at University of Delaware, I started in Computer Science, and by the end hated it for the seemingly inapplicability of the abstract programming exercises were were doing. And I got panicky about a future life in some windowless programmer chamber.
I started shopping for another major by flipping through the college catalog- and when I got to "G" I was reminded of this January 1973 issue of National Geographic which had for some reason captured my attention long ago in its article on "This Changing Earth" (hah, available from Amazon)
So I tool Geology 101-- and fell in love with it. I read the whole damned textbook, I sat in the front of the lecture hall. I switched majors and the rest is pseudo history....
