For a few years, such little black and white squares have made their appearance on a growing number of print media. Only after someone pointed them out to me and gave me the name (QR code) did I notice them around me. In Japan, they are ubiquitous, and most camera-phones can read them and instantly connect to the indicated website. Another use is to quickly get namecard data into your cameraphone addressbook.
