The 5 estimates we received by people who actually visited our house were $575, $825, $975/$1075, $1150, and $5600. These guys were one of the 3 over $1000 (unless I was willing to sign that day, and make a down payment in advance, which is usually a sign of a disappearing contractor).
Since I paid $575 to get this done, this estimate would be paying 86% more for the same work (69% more if I'd signed right then).
Suffice to say, they did not get the job, and more and more I am realizing that if you sign somethign during the same visit they give it to you, you are pretty much always being screwed. I really need to remember that.
Other impressions: Friendly receptionist is not the brightest star in the galaxy.

BACKSTORY: We bought some more Thompson Creek windows, and we decided to also replace the gutter that had rusted out & fallen off the back of the house a few years ago. Thompson Creek told us it would be better to remove the unused boiler chimney and have the roof patched so there could be one continous gutter. But they would not do this themselves, despite accepting the job. Thus, Clint had to embark on the experience of finding someone to do the job.
