Jon Hendricks: Poet Laureate of Jazz

Jon Hendricks (16 September 1921 – 22 November 2017) —master of vocalese, “the epitome of hip,” “poet laureate of jazz”— has died at age 96.

"A singer and composer who developed [vocalese]an intricate style of vocal gymnastics to match his tongue-twisting lyrics. [His] Grammy-winning vocal trio, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, is widely regarded as the most influential singing group in jazz history."

Washington Post

22 November 2017.

Vocalese is a genre of jazz singing in which lyrics are sung note-for-note to often intricate melodies that were originally created by a soloist's improvisation.
