Maarten van der Weijden, Woudsend

Maarten van der Weijden (Alkmaar, 31 March 1981) is a Dutch swimmer. He is Olympic champion and world champion in open water swimming, indoor he won several national titles. During the annual sports gala of 2008, where he became sportsman of the year, he announced his farewell: "All good things come to an end".


August 18, 2018, Maarten uses his swimming talent to raise as much money as possible for research into the cure of cancer. by swimming almost 200 km along 11 cities in Friesland. A unique achievement and a unique event, ten years after he won a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing! He did not make it to the end, had to leave the water after 163 KMS, but collected 4.3 mij euro for van der research.
