my kind of Independence Day
Now this is how I celebrate...!! with real food from real gardens grown right down the road from me...
I grew up with a garden out back that had sweet peas planted on St. Patrick's Day... and a basement stocked full of home canned tomatoes and relish plus a freezer filled with okra, squash and green beans... Grandmom even had a root cellar where she kept the cabbage and potatoes all winter long...
I am not as independent as author/farmer Barbara Kingsolver, who wrote Animal, vegetable, miracle : a year of food life, but I always have dreamed of going back to the farm... I do so wish I had a little garden and even a pond...!!
But for now, I will harvest my bounty at the local farmers' market and cook up all those good vegetables for a grand country supper... USA style... :)
Happy 4th of July, America...!!
The best food is what's grown closest to you... eat seasonally... support sustainably grown food in your area.
