Maize on the water in Xochimilco
Roasted and boiled maize ears on sale in Xochimilco, in the south of Mexico City. Xochimilco is known for its system of canals and artificial islands, or floating gardens, known as "chinampas", that remain as a vestige of the city's pre-Hispanic past. Visitors ride in colorful boats called “trajineras”, while vendors in smaller boats called "chalupas” offer souvenirs and delicious foodstuffs like this fresh maize, cooked on the boat itself.
