Women farmer group leaders in Rangpur
Momataz and Lilofah (second and third from left) in Rangpur Bangladesh are leaders in a women farmers’ group that has been active for one year. The group gives them access to service providers, seed and information, while they are also encouraged to discuss gender issues in the community.
Previously, they had only sown rice, but now they have learned to sow rice alongside a maize-vegetable intercropping system. “We have started to use maize leaf for animal fodder, and can sell the seed for a good price,” said Momataz. Through the group they have also learned how to store the seed in poly bags.
After being given access to machinery through local service providers, the community had enough income to purchase their own power tiller. Then, “after the harvest, everything is done by women!”, said Ramisa (far left).
Mosheddah (fourth from left) adds: “Husbands and wives discuss how to use income between them, it depends on the family.”
