In 1563 Pope Pious IV, following an urban renovation project, commissioned this great monument. The work on the magnificent statue of Neptune was assigned to a great Flemish sculptor, Jean Boulogne De Donai called "il Giambologna", while Tommaso Laureti designed the base. It is an excellent example of the Bolognese renaissance. It represents Neptune cooling down water.
People from Bologna usually refer to fountain as "il gigante" (The Giant). In effects, the statue in bronze of the marine God is high 3,20 meters and hung 22 quintals. (4850 lb)
