Bean diversity helps farmers tackle climate change
Clare Mukankusi, CIAT bean breeder in Kawanda, Uganda. She leads breeding efforts for the bean genebank. 15 varieties of seeds were introduced to farmers in Hoima, north-western Uganda, each with different properties: drought resilience; disease tolerance; high iron, with support from Uganda's National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI)and the Climate Change And Food Security program CCAFS. Farmers are now making trade-offs, planting varieties that help cope with extreme conditions.
