Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Sept 2012

Grave stones for Mrs Sarah Sargent (D: Aug 21st, 1771) in the Point of Graves Burial Ground, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Point of Graves burial ground is one of New Hampshires oldest burial grounds, being officially established in 1671. The depicitions of death on the stones reflect the Puritan influences of the time. The stones and carvings were meant to serve as a reminder of one's mortality on this earth. The gravestones were hand carved by some of the finest stone cutters in New England at the time. This stone was carved by Homer of Boston, Mass
