'Sioux Sunrise', United States, South Dakota, Badlands National Park, Big Badlands Overlook
Below is an excerpt from my HDR travel blog. Cheers.
I rarely take a sunrise photo. The reason for this is that I'm not usually up at 5:30 AM in the morning. However, the best time to take a photo with a high dynamic range is in the morning or the evening. The colors are better, the light more dynamic and I find the weather is more dramatic at this time as it tries to decide what to do as the sun and the heat of the day begins to stir up the atmosphere.
I left Appleton, Wisconsin with my dad at 10 AM and arrived 15 hours later at about 1 AM in the Badlands. My dad and I slept in the back of our van parked in the Big Badlands Overlook, so that when I opened the back door, the first view would be the sun coming up over the Badlands. 4 hours later I was running around capturing the sun as it peeked over the horizon. Capturing shots like this requires effort and planning. My efforts paid off. I really love this shot.
