laCie 5big NAS suckfest - 2

    Newer Older

Setting up 4 of the LaCie "5big 7.5TB Network" NAS devices.

The plan was to use them to catch data we were pulling off of the Amazon S3 storage cloud via an insane internet connection (25 megabytes/second sustained via http requests to amazon S3).

This is before we realized how badly they perform. We could not write to the CIFS shares over gigabit ethernet at anything higher than 6MB/second.

When your internet connection is faster than your local-LAN storage you know you have a problem.

So the 5Big actually sucks or was there a bottleneck outside of the 5Big?

JesperA - the 5Big was the bottleneck (understandable for an underpowered home-oriented device) - we could not write CIFS at more than 6MB/sec. Copying data in via NFS shares maxed out at about 8MB/sec and we got a bit higher (8-12MB/sec) if we parallelized the copy streams.
