kayak & big ship: a mile out
In the background is a large ship near the north shore of the Forth. The Skandi Arctic is much nearer to both the camera and the kayak, but not yet near enough to get both in the same shot with the narrow angle of view of the 500mm lens.
It's very hard to find such a small thing so far away in such a featureless expanse with a 500mm lens. When you can't see it in the viewfinder you don't know in which direction to move the aim to find it. The same problem exists trying to find stars and planets with astronomical telescopes. Having some kind of sighting aid is a great help. I was using a red dot gun sight adapted as a 500m lens sight which made finding the kayak very easy.

This was one of its early trials, and most successful.]
