Classic Muriwai

Newer Older

I was out in West Auckland last night for dinner and decided to stop by Muriwai on my way back to catch the sunset. I went up to the viewing platforms to get a classic Muriwai shot of the gannet colony. Even though this exact shot has been done a million times already, I had to have my own version!

One thing I didn't count on was so many gannets flying around - I thought there'd be a few but there were heaps, right in the middle of the shot too, which I didn't want. Luckily a 3-stop ND filter was enough to slow the shutter down just enough so that the flying birdies were invisible (well, almost, there were a few white streaks I had to clone out, but nothing major).

The sunset turned out to be pretty good too.

Wow! This is one of those images that is probably underappreciated until seen larger. I was confused by those white specs, but now seeing that they are birds I think this is great stuff. I'll bet a nice 16x24 print would be pretty awesome.

This is awesome Chris. I love the whole thing even if it had no birds, so they are just a bonus.

Cracking shot Chris, Nice original angle. I always found that the safety barrier here was at a seriously annoying height for a tripod.
