I was with a friend from work and we took off a few hours and went to Carmichael at a wonderful place called Effie Yeaw Wildlife Center. We walked the trails and encountered lots of butterflies, tiny little wild flowers and two turkeys.
At first I thought they were they same turkey as we had looped around on the trails, but as I was processing the photo's I realize that they are two different Toms.
This large turkey was gobbling all the time and as soon as he'd finished he'd fan his tail feathers. The other fascinating thing was that as he gobbled the feathers across his back would vibrate and then he'd raise his head, kinda pull together some of the feathers in behind his large tail feathers which cause those lovely large tail feathers to arch up and expand. Quite impressive to watch this guy.
I realized hat this guy was different from the second one we met on the trail because he has quite a bit of blue coloring on his cheeks and because he as a wattle. The second Tom hardly had any blue coloration on his cheeks and instead of a waddle he seemed to have a pointy spike... I'm wondering if maybe this was the beginning of a waddle.
