Shinjuku Hanazono Shrine Grand Festival

One element in a Japanese festival is carrying the mikoshi, portable shrine, through the streets of the neighborhood where the shrine is located. The mikoshi is the size of a small car, and is carried on the shoulders of crowds of participants who are dressed in happi coats and hachimaki. The chanting of the crowds, the police blowing their whistles, and beating wooden clackers makes for quite the joyous cacophony. Here, we're following the mikoshi parade down the main streets of one of the busiest areas of Tokyo.
