COO Education Conference 2015 ‘Our Children, Our Future, Our Vision’
Chiefs of Ontario hosted an Education Conference in Toronto titled ‘Our Children, Our Future, Our Vision’. The conference took place March 5, 6 and was intended for a target audience that includes Chiefs, Councillors, and education professionals involved in the formal and informal lifelong education of First Nation learners.

“It is essential for education leaders within our communities to come together and discuss the important topic of working collectively to transform education systems to better meet the unique needs of First Nation learners,” said Chiefs of Ontario Education Portfolio holder Grand Chief Gordon Peters. “It has been a long time coming but the time is right to make collective strides that support and maintain First Nations control of First Nations education.”

Keynote speakers, panellists and other presenters shared current information while a variety of workshop sessions will facilitate networking and brainstorming for solutions of the burning issues in First Nations education. Sessions will also focus on sharing success stories for improving the educational experience of our most precious resource, our children.

Ontario Regional Chief Stan Beardy said, “It is up to us to chart our own path forward in education. The federal government has wielded control for too long and our children have suffered the consequences. We are determined to establish a better way forward for future generations.”

Special guests included Sharon Venne, lawyer and Treaty #6 ambassador to the United Nations and Annie Kidder, Executive Director of People for Education along with many other knowledgeable professionals.
