Summit Apartment Building (1916)
228 South Summit Street
Iowa City, Iowa
Architect: Parker N. Berry
As Louis Sullivan's chief draftsman between 1909 and 1917, Parker Berry originally designed this apartment building, one of his few independent commissions, with Sullivanesque-like ornamentation but for whatever reason this was not included, leaving the structure simple and plain. It was the first apartment to be built in Iowa City. When Berry finally left Sullivan's office, his career as an architect was cut short when he unexpectedly died. He was only 30 years old.
