Not Your Average Soup Dumpling

麻辣湯包 (Spicy Soup Dumpling) from 萬客樓 (Wan Ke Lou Restaurant). You know how many restaurants offer "spicy" things that have no kick? Not so with this! That bright orange color in the skin is there as a warning. The filling is standard ground pork with vegetables, but the broth is super spicy.

By the way, 麻辣 means "numbing spiciness/numbingly spicy". I

This restaurant offers mostly Northern-Chinese style foods like dumplings, potstickers, rolled pancakes, and noodles. Not only that, you can also choose from many different side dishes like deep-fried silk tofu (!!), snails, crunchy greens topped with mayo, eggplant, etc, and a few deep-fried dim sum options like spring rolls, sesame balls with red bean paste, and fried taro puffs (a personal favorite, as long as they are properly fried). The restaurant 萬客樓 is quite popular and even have a take-out window! Their kitchen is also in full view from both the seating and the outside, and it's fun to watch the pancakes frying and workers wrap the soup dumplings.

Did I mention that they offer the BEST sweet soymilk that I have ever tasted? It's totally free and they have self-serve dispensers and FREE, UNLIMITED REFILLS.
