Scenes from the Çukur neighbourhood of Istanbul
Just across the way from Istiklal, going north, towards the Golden Horn, you first come across a main road which takes the traffic up to Taksim Square. Cross over that street and you end up in a fascinating area of old 19th century buildings, mainly houses, all differently coloured and in various states of (dis-)repair, also the odd old church building, shops and so on. The area hasn't been gentrified like the areas back the other side (towards the Bosphorus). Apparently, the transvestites who used to live that side have now moved over to live around here.
