Armada portrait, Elizabeth I (1590)

Painted by an unknown artist, the portrait commemorates and contributes to one of the founding narratives of England: thwarting the invasion of Britain by the Spanish Armada.

The portrait was bought from descendants of Sir Francis Drake for £10.3m in 2016, and currently hangs in the Queens House, Greenwich near to the site where she was born, 7th September 1533.
