blue curls

March 24, 2011: This photo won 2nd place in the contest "Elite Stamens" in the group Flowers or Insects - MACRO ELITE. Thank you very much!

I have no specific ID for this one, only that it's a bromeliad. I've been watching patches of these plants for a few weeks at South Coast Botanic Garden, fascinated by the blue coloring and curls. The part of the bloom you see here extends from a coral-pink pod, and you can see some of that pink color in the bokeh.I hope someone knows the name! (Zuiko 50mm macro, f/4, 1/80 sec., ISO 400, heavy overcast, handheld)

Update: Jungle Mama pointed the way by suggesting that this is a Billbergia bromeliad (thanks!). Now that I've looked at pictures of many Billbergias, I am quite sure this one is Billbergia nutans, a native of Brazil, often known by the popular name, Queen's Tears.
