A semicircle of light purple salvia blooms captured at South Coast Botanic Garden. I loved the array and color but wanted the green background (which was fairly close to the flowers) to go soft. I kept opening up my lens aperture and finally achieved the softness I wanted at f/3.5, which also caused the upper edge of some petals to go out of focus. I was OK with that compromise because most stamens are sharp.
Some macro photographers want maximum sharpness and stick to small apertures like f/22 to get that sharpness. My aim is not scientific accuracy but an emotional interpretation, as I hope to convey a sense of the wonder I feel when viewing natural beauty.
