A second capture from yesterday's trip to the El Dorado Nature Center in Long Beach, California USA. I saw a flowering tree from a distance and noticed lots of movement as I came closer. Closer yet, and I saw lots of swallowtail butterflies flapping about frantically (as they tend to do). I have only a little experience with these butterflies -- just enough to know that they move around so much that they are difficult to photograph. I switched to my zoom lens (which has some macro capability) and shot like crazy while as many as a dozen or more butterflies landed for mere seconds, flapped their wings furiously, and then moved on to the next flower. I stayed with them for quite a while, and this is one of the better keepers from the session. In a perfect world, the foreground flowers would have been fresher and more in focus, but I needed the fast shutter speed and thus got shallow depth of focus and gave all of that focus to the butterfly. (Zuiko 70-230mm zoom, f/5.6, 1/800 sec., ISO 100, sun, handheld)

Closer view of its proboscis -- and you can count hairs!
