Impressions of Patagonia #2 - Lago Grey, Chili

    Newer Older

    Must View Large on Black
    Technical: Nikon D3x + CPL, 1/40s at f8, 200mm

I wanted to come back from my trip with photographs of blue ice, be it abstract or more classic. However, never in my wildest dreams did I believe that blue ice could produce such astounding colors without the help of processing or use of filters of some sort.

I discovered a true fascination for ice (especially blue), it is just crazy beautiful. I felt like a kid at the counter of some dream candy store. It was difficult to concentrate because I was seeing this for the first time and was just speechless.

This is an abstract of an iceberg on Lago Grey in Torres del Paine National Park taken during a boat cruise. The frame probably represents an ice section about 3m high. The blues are just glowing thanks to a cooperative sun (that day at least).

I hope to have the opportunity to take this type of shot again, meanwhile I have this and a couple of others.

Please take the time to leave a comment, always appreciated.

That is some intense color. I saw some blue ice from a dive trip up in Alaska, but it was nowhere close to this. Of course, I wasn't able to get up close, so I didn't have the opportunity to see all the detail. Nicely done!

Brilliant shot. Never thought ice could give out shades of purple colors as well. Lovely abstract.

That is most certainly the kind of ice to go ga-ga over. I didn't take the Lago Grey boat cruise and only shot from a distance. But even if I had been closer I think I wouldn't have been able to shoot such an incredible scene. It looks almost as if you shot underwater. No wonder you chose this for the main photo of your set.

I love your words and enthusiasm. I feel your excitement. I know that you would have worked hard to find the amazing image here. I also know that these are true colors of nature - a year ago I would have doubted it but now know it is as seen. Wonderful.
