The Silent Majority

Ever since rezlab joked that the only trees in Irvine are eucalytpus, I have been seeing them everywhere! I even imagine that there are two warring factions of landscapers here: the eucalyptus boys and the palm gang. An all-out turf war can't be far off.

I like this-- for some reason I never expect to see Eucalyptus in any pictures outside of Australia.

oh please -- what about all the jacarandas?! and there are lots of pines.

but, if irvine were to have a tree war right now it would be between the olives and the peppers.

    you know i'm right.

(beppie there are groves and groves of them throughout most of california)

('matter, is this turtle rock loop? looks familiar)

beppie- like em says. no koalas (yet), but lots of eucalyptus here.

em- it could be TR loop now that you mention it, but its actually the end of Harvard, just before Culver. Mason Park on the left, Uni High straight ahead.

I drive down this street almost everyday. I never knew it could look so eerie. The smell of eucalyptus always reminds me of my days @ UCI.

Although I am "only" 48, I can remember when Main Street (near MacArthur" was a two lane road. Eucalyptus were favored by planners and landscape architects in Invine work due to the large euc windrows that separated the orange groves. It just made sense to plant more eucs to match the existing ones - not to mention the fact that they grow quickly and had few pests - until the borer beatle infestion in the late 80's.
Anyway - nice shot of the "character" of one of California's better planned communities.

Living in Irvine this picture is really funny- Although I think that the turf war would be waged between the eucalyptus and the pine trees, which both hold an equal status among Irvine communities.
