Birth Defects and Genetic Conditions: Family Stories
Every 4.5 minutes, a baby is born with a birth defect. Major birth defects are conditions present at birth that cause structural changes in one or more parts of the body. They may affect how the body looks, works, or both. Birth defects can vary from mild to severe. The well-being of the person depends mostly on which organ or body part is involved and how much it is affected. Birth defects are a leading cause of death during the first year of life, accounting for about 1 in 5 infant deaths.

In this album, people living with a birth defect and families with children affected by birth defects tell their stories. They want to share their experiences to help us understand what it’s like to live with a birth defect and how these conditions have affected their lives. CDC would like to thank them for sharing their stories.
