Echo Hall - Camps Gulf Cave

Newer Older

This is the largest known room inside Camps Gulf cave. I imagine that it ranks amongst the top 3 cave chambers in the United States as far as it's huge size is concerned. If anybody knows that to be incorrect, please speak up and leave a comment. My wife Janice is the caver/model in this scene. The room was illuminated by fellow cave photographer Willie Hunt's xenon strobes. Here is a link to a photo of the light source: www.pbase.com/cavertim/image/14761095

    Neilsphotography,

The exposure was 1 second but most of it was in the dark since we used xenon strobes with a very short flash duration. I shot open bulb in fact while firing two cameras. I opened the shutter on both cameras, called out "fire" on the radio and then closed both shutters, all within that second. In my photo description, I included a link to an image of the light source used in this photo. Actually, we used two of the strobes shown in that photo. This is not a composite image.

Thanks for that insight of how to shoot inside caves Tim!
I suppose that was the easy bit after lugging all that equipment all that way and keeping it all dry.
    Well done!

15 years ago I went caving in Tenn, The cave I had been in had several very large chambers, and some halls definitely worthy of note (in my mind). I think it is located just south of Fall Creek Falls. It is a very muddy cave with some rather deep sink holes in the back. You can talk to my friend about it, his flikr name is jdj150.

When last caving Camps Gulf Cave, it was said to hold the 3rd, 4th, and 5th largest known rooms in North America. The 1st largest being the Big Room in Carlsbad Caverns, and the 2nd largest being the Rumble Room in Rumbling Falls Cave, located near Camps Gulf.
