Hallmarks

Top to bottom, Christian John Reid (of Reid & Sons) maker mark; duty mark for Victoria; British sterling mark; Newcastle city mark; London city mark; date letter for 1874-5 (May-April). The London mark possibly indicates that the sliver (along with others in this set, dating from 1869-1880) were stamped again once the Newcastle assay office closed in 1884, at which point Reid Bros registered new marks with the London assay office. If so, perhaps some of the set was hanging around in Reid Bros for 15 years or more before being sold to my great, great grandfather.
