Grasshopper Twists: a recipe

Similar patterns: For cuff-down (with heel flap) versions using a similar texture (although a different twisted stitch), see the Diagonal Cross Rib Socks from Favorite Socks or the free Cable Twist Socks pattern.

Materials: Madelinetosh Sock yarn and US 1.5 (2.5mm) circular or dpns

Gauge: about 8.5 st/in in stockinette (the cable rib stitch is a bit rigid)

Toe: Cast on 26st (13st on each stick) using the magic cast-on. In the manner described therein, increase to 70 st total.

Foot: Knit the top of the sock in the cable rib stitch pattern (see below) and the bottom in stockinette until the piece measures two inches less than the desired foot length. [For my 9.25” foot, I knit eight repeats of the stitch pattern to get a 7.25” toe-and-instep.]

Cable Rib Stitch (close-up view of texture here)

Twist = k2tog leaving the stitches on the left needle, knit the first of these stitches and then drop both

Row 1: p1, [k3, Twist, p2] repeat 4 times, k3, Twist, p1

Rows 2, 4, 6, and 8: p1, [k5, p2] repeat 4 times, k5, p1

Row 3: p1, [k2, Twist, k1, p2] repeat 4 times, k2, Twist, k1, p1

Row 5: p1, [k1, Twist, k2, p2] repeat 4 times, k1, Twist, k2, p1

Row 7: p1, [Twist, k3, p2] repeat 4 times, Twist, k3, p1

Heel: Knit a short row heel on 35 stitches, in the manner of this tutorial, wrapping 10 stitches on each side.

Leg: Rejoin and knit the leg in pattern until it is 1.5” less than the desired length. [I knit eight repeats to get 5” before ribbing.] Then switch to [k5, p2] ribbing (as in Row 2 of the stitch pattern) for 1.5” or until the leg is the desired length.

Bind Off: You’ll want a bit of stretch. Here’s a version from Wendy: K2, slip both back to left needle, k2tog, [k1, slip both back to left needle, k2tog] repeat.

Weave in ends and enjoy!
