Classic Rain Pose

When I got to the rookery last Wednesday (May 27th), it was raining. Many of the birds were in this position, head tucked under one wing, one foot up. A lot of these nests took a beating in the recent heavy rains, but this one was very solid and well built.


Birds sleep with one leg up to minimize heat loss (stay warmer). Apparently their legs get more blood pumped through them than other parts of their bodies and they lose more heat through their legs and feet! Usually the foot is tucked up under a wing...
