Koi Pond Bento

yes, I know, people freak out when they see blue rice.....

Too many holiday obligations to make many bento's this month, but I've been thinking about this one for awhile.

The stones surrounding the pool are soy-braised button, bunashimeji (beech), and tiny enoki mushrooms. The Koi are kamaboko with red bell pepper and nori details. The pond is a thin layer of blue rice - underneath is plain old chicken fried rice. Not shown is a Carrot and Daikon side salad. Maybe I'll post that tomorrow :)

i love it! i can so appreciate blue rice. when i was growing up (in sc, usa) we had rice every single day of my life. at a certain it was my job to make it. i hated that. and i hated that it was plain white all the time. so one day i added food coloring to make it turqoise. it was beautiful. my dad would not eat it and made remake it. so i appreciate your blue rice, plus i loooooooooove koi ponds.

im in love with those stones!!!! great idea. did u freehand those koi fish?
  • Cathryn3 5y

thanks Laura Bento - no I didn't freehand the fish, I found a line drawing using google image search and transferred to paper for a makeshift template for the outline (I did freehand the koi details). Actually, the hardest part of this bento was placing the mushroom stones.
