2019 International Women's Day March in Rio de Janeiro
On March 8, the collective Mulheres Unidas ("Women United") organized a protest on occasion of International Women's Day. Before the march started, the collective read out loud the International Feminist Manifesto, a text drafted in collaboration with 24 feminist leaders from around the world, including four Brazilians. During the march, different themes came up, such as protest against the assassination of Rio city councilor Marielle Franco and the lack of answers on who ordered her killing. Participants also showed discontentment with Bolsonaro's recent Social Security Reform which will affect poor women and women with children the most. The main theme, however, was femicide and gender-based violence in a country with the 5th highest femicide rate in the world.
