From Valongo to Favela: Exhibition Slideshow
From May 2014 to February 2015, the Rio Museum of Art (MAR) featured this exhibition linking two spots in Rio's Port area where the museum is located: the slave wharf, or Valongo, and the first favela, Providência. The exhibition does a lovely job of raising awareness of the somber links between slavery and urban exclusion in Brazil today, while simultaneously valuing the cultural vibrancy and contributions of the communities that have resulted from this rich but very sad history.
