Brown-headed Nuthatch (Sitta pusilla)
"hey mister! you gonna stand there all day?"
this monster is about 4.25" long and weighs about 10gm. i luv these little guys, followed a family group around thru breeding and post-fledging a few years ago. they're amazing creatures, among a small group of birds that may use a tool to perform a task. they're pine specialists, rarely seen in a hardwood. they'll take a piece of bark (or a sunflower seed) and use it to pry off bark in order to get to insects, larva or eggs hidden underneath. they're also known to engage in co-operative breeding, where an unmated male from the previous year stays with its parents and helps to raise the next year's brood.
