Hochelaga

Yes as a typical Montrealer I'm always drawn back to the old quarter.. I love Europe and this area could be any place in most European cities... lots of tourists from all over the world when I was there..

I love Old Montreal, except it's probably a little too touristy. Made me wonder -- do a lot of locals actually live in the old quarter?

I love it too. I'd say most popular places all over the world are too touristy these days. It's the nature of the beast I'm afraid. Yes lots of people live down there but it's becoming increasingly difficult for them because there are a lot of events that draw in thousands of people many of whom party into the night... so fireworks, concerts and loud people make living there difficult. Many end up moving out despite loving the region. Honestly I don't think there is a solution other than good sound proofing and most who can afford to live there can afford it.

djipibi - Hochelaga was the original name of the city if I recall my history correctly. Perhaps I'm wrong.

oops... my bad I was thinking Hochelaga-Maisonneuve... Of course Old Montreal would have been called Hochelaga or be near Hochelaga site...
