Hey! - Insects with Attitude

If any insect had a personality, I would say it is the male leafcutter bee. Not only do they look unusual with green eyes and furry heads and front legs, but they are aggressive little bugs too. He will pick a group of flowers he likes and chase off all other bees. If a female lands in his spot, then he tries to drop down on her ungracefully...

Great color and textures. I was under the impression that females did most of the actual "work" in a bee colony. Not so?

It depends on the bee. These bees don't have hives. The females still have a lot of work to do...they have to find a hollow spot, make a nest (cut some leaves to make chambers, gather pollen, and lay eggs.) The males don't help with any of this, but perhaps by guarding and keeping all other bees away, he helps assure that if any female enters his territory that she gets plenty of nectar and pollen.
